The Swan's Last Flight

Nina Ananiashvili gave her final performance as Odette in Swan Lake with the American Ballet Theater. Her performance was near perfection and she ended her performance by giving both of her male dance partners a single red rose from her bouquet and throwing the rest to the orchestra. She spoke to each principal dancer and staff individually and uniquely. The most interesting thing was when the conductor gave Ananiashvili his baton and then the ballerina brought her daughter on stage.

The lede for this story was not extremely interesting, but summarized the story well. Even though the lede was not that great, Alastair Macaulay did a really good job of describing what happened at the ballerina's final performance. He not only described the physical aspects in a very colorful way, he tried to explain the emotions you could see in Ananiashvili's face and how important this performance was to her and her fellow dancers.
